Why did my ex wish me a happy Birthday?

Me and my ex had a really bad breakup. After months he sent me a text to make peace on his end. I was to pissed to accept it at the moment. Time went on and I decided to get over it and send the same text. He calls me and to tell me he’s seeing someone and to ease off? Which was totally uncalled for because I wasn’t trying to be with him. My birthday comes and he sends a happy birthday text. But you just told me I couldn’t text you, but you text me.

He probably did it just to not seem like a sick for pretending to not remember your birthday. Or maybe he doesn't want to completely cut you off incase he breaks up with his current partner
