The man is in love, and now that he's losing you, he can't grasp his emotions in a rational way. He's lost it. It's an extreme sense of abandonment and betrayal he's experiencing. Most women monkey branch into other relationships when they leave a guy, so he's most likely assuming there's another man who has gauged your interested and simply becoming defensive. You're only hurting him more by stringing him along if you genuinely want to leave.
