Well I don't know who broke it off but if it was you he is hoping to fix whatever went wrong if him he regrets it. He will probably move on when there is someone new. Guys minds run on 90% chemicals and relationships are full of them. He is literally in withdrawal and this is the kind that can last for years. Brains are funny like that.

Honestly, I had a guy like that. Not quite an ex as we never dated but anytime he texted me, he would tell me that I could text him anytime and he was there for me. After how our thing went, I felt it was only him being nice and politely telling me to fuck off as saying that ultimately ends the line of conversation
Leave the exes ALONE. He wants to try to get back together and you best to cut that one loose. Otherwise you need to just remove yourself from the group if he is always around.
