We broke up around 4 months ago and a few days back I asked my ex boyfriend a second chance again because I still love him a lot. He rejected because he had already let go and said that he hoped that we can remain as friends. I told him I can't do that because it still hurts ever since we broke off few months back. Today we met at work and he kept making small talks with me eventhough I clearly told him it still hurts a lot for me. Why can't he understand?

He's probably not able to be either all or nothing. He doesn't understand that you need to not be friends because it would hurt you to be close with no prospect of romance. He just thinks you were involved before so why not be friends.
