Closure is something you give yourself, not something you can get from the person who hurt you. On this sense, he was smart to understand this.

On the flip side, your boyfriend probably had some experience in the past where someone else was 'friends with their ex' or also 'getting closure' and ending up dropping him in the process. That's probably his past hurt reflecting on you.

In general, there really is no 'need' to connect with an ex unless you run in similar social circles or genuinely have similar hobbies, and an amicable relationship does effect your day to day.

Yes it makes sense for him to break up with you. Once you break up then whatever closure you need must be done before you get into another relationship, everything must be wrapped up completely before you move on. Once you begin your next relationship, there should be absolutely no contact with your ex ever again. That is how it should be ideally. Unfortunately for most people it is not and this where the problems begin.
