What sort of punishment? All such punishments have always been focused on women.

The medieval times used to be hard on cheaters and their reputation destroyed. Men who cheated on their women would be beaten up by her brothers and women who cheated would be publicly shamed and put on display on the market to be thrown at with vegetables. The punishments varied from place to place but generally no one was unpunished for it as it was seen as breaking the moral code of the bible.

Cheating only happens because its not punished and people are not shamed anymore for cheating like they used to be. Which should be the case as shaming and consequences are how you keep people to behave. Children learn what they should do by knowing what gives them consequences and what doesn't give them consequences.

Cheating was only accepted or tolerated by the rich in medieval times and it was usually those who started with all the immoral acts and they just bribed the church in order not to be punished for it.
