Why does my boyfriend not wanna break up?

I've been together with him for 8-9 months but due to our busy schedules we have talked less and eventually stopped spending a lot of time together. He says he's busy with school as well as trying to find a job which I understand but I am busy too yet I still manage to find time to at least talk to him yet most of the time when he's online he just plays and when he replies most of the it's "Eh, Huh, I don't know" plus he said he doesn't like being on his phone hence the replies.

I brought up the topic of breaking up in case he wants to find another person that's closer to where he lives but he disregarded it and said the night of the day we break up is when he is going to blow his brains away then I said "You promised not to do weed" and his reply was "And we promised not to break up." so I didn't bring it up again and yes I am still with him. He still acts detached sigh
