Do I have to consider this person I was boyfriend/girlfriend with when I was 15 my ex?

I had a silly little relationship when I was 15 and we never kissed or did anything. We just held hands and it only lasted a month. Also, we had 1 week of winter break in between so we didn't even see each other. We jumped into it very quickly after a week and a half of talking. I feel uncomfortable with the term ex as well. It wasn't a real relationship anyways we just agreed on calling each other that. I just have an extreme phobia of having an ex and I don't know what to do. I'm sixteen now though. Some people are saying it is and others are saying its not. I'm very confused and I would prefer not to have an ex.

I don't think that there is an official definition of a former boyfriend/girlfriend. An "ex" can be defined the way you want it. It could just be a friend or an acquaintance. It does not have to be a person you had an affectionate or even intimate relationship with.

You call this relationship "silly" but there is nothing silly about holding hands. It is innocent relationship and if it meant something to you, then you can call this relationship "ex" because to you invested your time and emotions into it.

Adults probably would refer to an "ex" a person they were intimate with for at least a little while. If you are uncomfortable calling this short relationship an "ex", adults would probably not consider that person since it was short and nothing intimate happened.

I would suggest you forget about referring to that short relationship as "ex" unless you were so emotionally involved that breaking with him caused you a lot of emotional pain and distress. Then you would be entitled to call him like that because he had a great meaning in your life.

@PhantomMenace22 Thanks for the tag. I did have a look at the question and while you are right, the header is a mere statement. However, the end of the descriptive asks a question and therefore, I cannot hide this question.

I have previously been reprimanded for hiding a similar type of question and GaG told me that if there is a question in the descriptive, this is considered a question and not just a statement.

I’ve had “relationships” before, but I don’t consider any of the people I’ve dated, regardless of length, exes. Technically they would be, but I don’t see it that way, as we were either too young to really understand a relationship, or there was never enough of an emotional connection to call it one.


I also feel like “ex” just has a negative connotation, and I have no hard feelings towards any of the people I’ve known. I’d just say, “hey, that’s ____, we used to date.” If anyone asked.

Yeah, I totally agree with that. So if someone were to ask how many exes you have, would you say you dont have any? (I know that people dont go around asking that question lol but just wondering)

Ultimately, you decide what you are, but, in my opinion, I don't think you have an ex. I think you had a guy who was infatuated with you, and you him, that's not a relationship

I agree with that but the only thing that confuses me is: wouldn't it still be considered an ex-boyfriend? So wouldn't that make that an ex? Because we did make it official so I'm really confused

But it wasn't really a real boyfriend or like a real relationship so I'm not sure but some of my friends at school say someone they were together with in middle school is an ex still so I'm not even sure at this point

i get that you made it "official" and all. but you didn't do any boyfriend/girlfriend things... what boyfriend/girlfriend doesn't see each other on winter break? and it was only a month long. titles are one thing, but actually acting the part and being serious about it is another
