If you feel like wishing Happy Birthday to an ex, go ahead and do it... but please don't feel obligated to do it. My wife and I amicably divorced several years ago after 20 years of marriage. We still text each other on birthdays and major holidays.

NO. Why should you feel obligated to wish an "ex," someone you're no longer close to, a happy birthday? I don't care if it was a clean breakup, they're still your ex.
If I ran into them, or saw it on their social media? Sure, maybe... though I still wouldn't feel obligated to. Once they're your ex, you're no longer tied to do little things like that unless you wish to. Meaning if you feel weird or awkward about it, or think they'll misinterpret it? Don't bother.

No, you shouldn't have contact with your ex unless you seriously planning on getting back together.
