Decode guy’s behavior?

To try to make this simple, knew of a guy from middle school, matched on tinder, he cut to the chase, we went out, great time. Connection was like we have known each other forever and have been dating forever. Talked about future things, marriage, kids, etc. He ended things. In text. Met up later on and I accepted it and things were good. He left and went to go hangout with his ex’s brother and I left and hung out with a guy who wanted to hangout which I told him about. The first time he ended things he ended up telling me awhile after that he wanted me to fight for him. Like he was testing me. Anyways, we started hanging out again and at first he made it seem like we were breaking some sort of rule, then he got sick. He wasn’t over his ex who cheated on him. He told me that he needed to talk to her and I agreed. However he was short with me and ignored me the few days up til meeting her and then I didn’t know he was even going to meet her the night he did but he ended up calling me asking me to come over and talk and then he told me I was the one he wanted and that he was dumb and didn’t realize what a great person he had in front of him. So we hung out the next couple days however he was still sick so it was me pretty much taking care of him whining the whole time. A few days later he leaves and texting was boring, not much said. Then today I text him a good morning text and he texts back good morning text not as happy as mine so I knew something was off. Then he texts a huge paragraph text just like the first time he ended things.
