Why would my ex tell me that we can be friends but we can’t be close anymore?

She probably still has some lingering feelings if you two broke up recently. It's hard to go straight from being close to just being casual friends. There's still an emotional connection there.

By saying you can't be close anymore, she's probably trying to put some distance between you. Maybe she needs space to fully get over the relationship and move on emotionally. Jumping right back into being super tight could confuse things.

Or there may be a new guy she's seeing/interested in and doesn't want you being close buds to mess that up or make the new dude jealous.

Or she might be worried that if you guys stay super tight, one of you could get hurt again if old feelings start creeping back in. Being casual friends is safer.

So in summary - sounds like she still cares but is trying to protect either her heart or a potential new relationship. The "can't be close" is probably just a boundary until more time passes.

For now man, I'd just chill as acquaintances. Give her the space she asked for. In time maybe you can build a legit friendship if you're both over it for real. But don't push to be BFFs again yet, ya know?
