Is this right or was he too harsh?

my boyfriend almost broke up with me after he found out I had not deleted chats from exes. I never delete chats but I do delete saved photos on my phone from exes. I never open the chats or text them , just I have some there bc I forgot about it and others I have there bc I have my photos there that I can't delete. he took it as disrespect and a lost of trust so he almost broke up with me. was he too harsh or is this the right response? (this is my first relationship by the way)

Hmmm, I'd say technically you're not in the wrong, but I do see why he would lose trust

To him it may seem like you keep them just to go back and reminisce

Perhaps a bit of overreaction but I wouldn't say he did it over nothing
