Well, I suppose if you are going to do it then just pull off the bandaid and be honest. He certainly won't be happy and probably see you as money hungry, but at least he won't have to worry about alimony.

Just use the rational points as to why you want to break up and take divorce from him. If he gets upset then so be it. There is no easy way to tell him without upsetting him.
