If he is your ex, then there must have been a good reason why and perhaps his lifestyle would have contributed in him becoming an ex.

Spending night times on a beach could be indicative that he likes to party and a beach is certainly a better place to get drunk than a van. It is also better to make noise than in a van, more discreet if you need to vomit your guts out. At least, on the beach you need not clean after your mess. You leave nature doing the job.

There are several different ways of being vulnerable and without more information, we don't know what kind of vulnerability she has. Perhaps it is better to keep her under control in a van than in public.
