Were you the dumper or the dumpee? The sadder the better.
I met Pat in 1979. She was cute, feminine, and she seemed to be really interested in me. I was 25, had dated casually but never been in love. . . until Pat. After about four months, I invited her to move in with me, and I was totally happy with my life. She went home with me for Christmas and met my family. After about 8 months, I started to think about proposing to her. Then she told me that she had decided that she wanted to break up and return to her ex-husband; she felt guilty about divorcing him and thought she should go back to "make things right."
I moved away but Pat and I stayed in touch for a few years, and she visited me once. She them moved to New York (1,000 miles away,) settled down with a farmer dude, had two kids, and told me she was happy. I didn't hear from her for 17 years.
I got married and 17 years later was getting divorced. In my loneliness, I thought about Pat, I wondered how life was treating her, so though a miraculous series of events, I located her. She had ended her relationship. We started talking by phone, then I went to visit her at Thanksgiving. I returned to see her again at Christmas. She came to visit me at Spring Break. That summer, she moved back to Florida and we started living together. We got married in February 2005.
In the fall of 2006, I got laid off from my job because of an abrupt and unexpected loss of our major client. When zI sent home to tell Pat, she said, "If you don't have an income to support me, there's no reason for us to stay together." She filed for divorce. Before the divorce was final, a mutual friend revealed to me that Pat had been having an affair. The divorce was quick and easy because we had only been married for two years.
What had once been a dream come true had become a nightmare. I felt devastated but I learned many lessons from the experience. The next 18 years were overwhelmingly positive for me and I have had no contact with Pat since the day our divorce became final.
First time I ever get mentioned in a question and it's this 😆
Yes. Sad, angering, depressing. She disappeared for two weeks with no warning or explanation. I texted, Facebooked, or called maybe once a day to no avail. As it turned out (and little did I know), her adoptive father was actively dying of cancer, as in he was literally in his final days; I knew he had cancer, but I didn't know it was THAT bad, knowudimean? She'd been openly and obviously active on Facebook though, adding apps, commenting on posts, and such...sorry, this whole thing was so middle school, it's embarrassing... all it would have taken was just a quick "hey, sorry, dad's dying, he only has a few days left, let's put this on hold". I'd have been totally fine.
He eventually did die and I felt like absolute trash. It was the week before Valentine’s Day too, so that added some complications. I had a bit of an in though: My high school girlfriend got engaged around the time that her father died as well, not long after. I asked her what to do, and she said it would be an okay idea to buy her a bracelet and flowers, which I did.
She appeared appreciative at first, made it seem like all was well and that we'd start things up again, but then a week later, she had some of her friends message me and tell me to leave her alone, that she hated me, that she never wanted to see me again, and such. So I asked her directly. I said "if you don't want this, just tell me." Then she sent me a flurry of texts saying that she hated me. The worst thing was "you are nothing I want in a man and you never will be." And that was it.
For the record, it KILLS me to know that the last thing I said to her was "I'm sorry." Context - She'd also said something to the effect of me bothering her while her father was dying... but then again, I didn't know and had no way of finding out without involving other people who didn't need to be.
It also didn't help that throughout all this, I had sub-zero confidence or self-worth.
Yeah. She was really something.
I was a stay home mom for a few years. I got bored, kids started elementary school so I decided to go back to work.
all was well… one day, he came home and needed the car to go to the data center in NJ. All normal… except he got dressed up a little nicer (yes, us women notice these things). At some point I call or text … nothing… normal… kids in bed… I checked on him again… nothing… I started to wonder… so I checked our joined credit card … (this was about 3 hours later) … there was a $300. charge on a very romantic restaurant that I had wanted to go to for our next special event.
My heart sank and I knew that was the end of my marriage…
the rest was a very very bad process if 3 years dragged out court nonsense divorce. He wasn’t happy and wanted to end the marriage. His mom took care of the kids mostly since I was working… it turned out… they knew to make sure I don’t get 51% to get custody to get child support… I learned all these in those years… my lawyer didn’t tell me anything. They like to drag out the process to make money… eventually I gave up and not take child support or alimony. I insisted that We continue to co-own our building … end of covid we sold it and made a good profit.
we have both moved on since. But took me 2-3 years to rebuild my finances.
any men/women out their suffering from a divorce.., as a single mom/dad… it’s not the end of the world… it’s another hump we have to jump over without falling too hard.
one thing I learned… the US court system is ruled to break up families.
when I stopped fighting… I had peace and much happier to start over from nothing.
when my mind is clear I know how to raise kids, how to make money and how to make good life decisions.
keep your mind clear, focuse and tomorrow is another day to have a good day.
It’s the positive attitude that gets me to a better place and raising decent kids.
I am not the type who wants to break a family or the kids.
I have seen enough women in my job who does bad things to families/kids … it’s sad… once upon a time, women were the stable of the house … now…
It was the first "real" relationship I was in. We were together a little over two years and were even talking marriage but then he developed a drug problem. I did everything to help him but he continued to lie to me and then started stealing my card and maxing it out! I was a college student and waitressing at night and weekends so we could have an apartment together and not struggle with bills, he was also working but started missing days. Between him not working as much, stealing my money and refusing to get help, we were financially struggling and I could tell he wasn't going to change. One morning while he was maybe working or maybe at a crack house, I decided to pack a few of my belongings and leave. I was numb and not really feeling any emotions while doing it, until I saw a picture of us on our shelf from his sister's wedding. I hadn't cried that hard since my grandpa died. I left him a note to call me and we did have a face to face conversation but I told him we were done and I will probably always love him but just lost faith and trust in him. It was a year before I even considered getting involved with someone. Thanks for allowing me to relive those wonderful memories 😂
It all good, @exitseven It's over and done with and I'm much, MUCH happier now 😊❤️

My story isn't super sad, but it happened at my lowest point in life. I was deeply depressed, out of a job and felt like my world was caving in on me. I wanted him so badly to understand the pain I was feeling. I needed him so badly that I pushed him away with one phone call. He wanted time and space to think about things and our relationship, but I couldn't even give him that. He broke up with me the night I called him about our relationship.
He was the only thing I had left and he left me.
Well... technically all breakups are a little sad, right? The saddest is of course my divorce. After literally trying everything to turn things around I learned there's no way to magically transform a violent toxic person to a normal, non-violent, non-toxic person. It affected the kids to have a divorce, but it would have been worse to stay with that guy. I walked away with my kids and the shirt on my back and left everything else behind, rebuilding our future on a shoestring budget.
I got dumped by two girls at the same time because they found out about each other. That happened when I was young and dumb.
No, I was never in a relationship.
