Would you breakup with someone who just got devastating news?

If you've ever seen the film Midsommar, the first bit of the film shines a light on the seemingly crumbling relationship of Christian and Dani. Christian is unhappy in their relationship, is disinterested anymore in hanging out with Dani, and both he and his friends are irritated with Dani's sister, who is bipolar and seems to them to be so overly dramatic and faking crisis all the time to where Dani always runs over and finds it's 'not that serious.'

So with the urging of his friends, Christian seems to be coming to the decision that he may break up with her soon until it turns out Dani's sister wasn't faking anything. She ends up unaliving both herself, and she and Dani's parents putting Christian in an awkward position of ending up trapped in a failing relationship and trying to comfort her in obvious worst time of her life.

Could you break-up with someone if they walked in right before you were going to break-up with that horrible news, or their dog just died, or they just found out they have cancer?

I can definitely see my opinion being relatively unpopular here but i have to be honest and say that once I have decided to end a relationship which I’ve had to do a fair number of times it’s been the only option left …. so the fact that their dog has died or ANY Other notable tragedy in their life wouldn’t stop me delivering my news as one has nothing to do with the other and it would be more wrong in my eyes to pretend to be anything other than who I am…. I mean how long would I be expected to wait? Is that fair on either of us? I wouldn’t expect more from them than support so why would I give more?
Being a compassionate person however I would offer every support I could to them not that I expect that offer to be well received.

not right then. like if i've been planning to break up, i'd delay that just a little. would be mean to give someone 2 terrible news the same day. at least i wanna make sure she's stable enough or has the necessary stabilizing network to cope with me leaving.

Possibly not on the day they receive the news, however if they anticipate the breakup talk and continually come up with some crisis to keep the talk at bay… then you just inevitably have to rip that bandaid off.

But staying out of pity isn’t mercy either.

You hold space, offer kindness, and once the dust settles, you tell the truth.

Compassion first, closure second.

That’s how adults end things with grace, not guilt.
