Why would an ex boyfriend call just to hear your voice?

Why would an ex boyfriend call to tell you they just called to hear your voice. Hearing my voice makes him feel special but doesn't talk about anything. Says he'll call me back but never does. I've never called an ex boyfriend to hear their voice, so what does he want?

he fears you'll reject him all over again, so he doesn't repeat the call. All he is doing is telling you he still likes you, and misses you.

Now it's up to you to follow up on his communicating that...IF you want anything more to do with him?
