Personally I find the term JAILBAIT to be offensive and its often used to insult me by people who see myself out with my thirty year old boyfriend.

There are 14 year olds mature enough to make the decision, but they are very few and far between. Historically, people's parents would be the ones arranging the marriage, so it was still an adult making the decision - hopefully with the child's best interest at heart. There's that, and also the fact that people back in the day actually dealt with reality - you were an adult by your early teens and people would treat you as one if you acted it. These days people are 30+ years old and are still basically children.
