How do I get him to put in more effort?

We are not in a relationship but kind of act like it.
When we are together he is adorable, when I go home (2hrs away) I feel forgotten.
He broke up with his ex about 6 months ago & I keep thinking he would have put in way more effort with her.

He leaves for uni soon & will be even further away so I need him to put in more effort. How can I get him to do this without actually bringing it up?
