Should I ask a mutual friend if my crush is single?

So this guy sent me a friends request on Facebook. I'd never heard of him before but I went into his profile and saw that we have some friends in common and go to the same uni so I accepted him. Tbh I thought he was cute so I followed him on instagram and he immediately followed back.

Now, on his IG he has A LOT of pictures with a girlfriend. They're all old pictures though and his Facebook profile says single but apparently they're still in contact. Long story short I don't know if they're still together.

We do have a friend in common and I was wondering if it's a good idea to ask about my crushes relationship status to this mutual friend. I'd ask him directly but we have never even said hi to each other before so I guess it'd be awkward. Thoughts?

You've never heard of this person before and are planning to ask a mutual friend his relationship status... what if this mutual friend doesn't know who he is either? Now you have let a complete stranger have access to your personal social media profiles.

They're actually very close friends lol and he's not a complete stranger as I've seen him on campus/parties many times after he added me. I don't really post anything important on my social media either so I didn't see a good reason not to accept his request.

The fact that you don't know them well enough to ask the person yourself should be a very large red flag.

For starters, ask him. The best way to, is to work it into something else that isn't a direct questioning of his relationship status. Like, throw a party and invite him, mention it's ok to bring his girlfriend if he has one. Something like that.
