My crush just broke up with his girlfriend, how long should we wait to date?

My crush and I were/are highly compatible and attracted to each other for some time now. Neither of us did anything about it (or spoke about it) due to him being in a relationship (7 months).

He, just this week, broke up with his girlfriend. He was distant at first but now is coming on strong again and asking me if I want to go out sometime.

TBH, everyone we know has been hoping we'd get together and have said we'd make a great couple. But, I feel a bit weird getting into a relationship with someone who has broken up so soon. Also, I know his ex-girlfriend was crazy about him. I don't want to disrespect her or make her think I was seducing her boyfriend away from her.
He may not have been crazy about her, like she was about him, but he liked her enough to be in a relationship and to have her fully involved in his life.
To have been an item and to have been so fully entwined in their families lives (both he and his ex still live with their respective parents/families), seems weird for me to show up in the midst of that.
