Since he's known his friends for a long time maybe, he has gotten real comfortable with them and is comfortable enough to call them babe. However, since you are his girlfriend, its probably different. he's not comfortable enough to call you babe as he is with his friends. Guess it just takes time

To him the word has a different connotation so calling you "babe" would feel the same as calling you "bro"
He doesn´t want to call his girlfriend the same thing he calls his friend, he uses the word babe differently.
He calls his guy friends babe but won't say that to his girlfriend its a little weird
If he calls his make friends babe, then that would feel very unromantic for him to call you babe.
Just call him bro and see how he responds
