I fixed my girlfriends car and she doesn't want to pay me for the parts, what do I do?

My girlfriends car broke down and I offered to fix her car for her, seeing as how I'm handy with a wrench. Anyways I fixed it for her and i told her how much the parts would be and she said she shouldn't have to pay for them. Because I make more money than her. Well... I fixed it for free, and that's where people spend the most money on when it comes to mechanics. I dont think it's fair that I have to not only fix it, but buy the parts too. Should I just count my losses? Or press the matter?

I see couple things here.

1. You offered to fix her car. She probably took that as you'd cover the cost of the repairs, regardless, if you physically did the work or took it somewhere to get it fixed.

2. Her comment about YOU should pay it because YOU make more money? That's a red flag for me. Just because someone makes more money doesn't mean THEY have to pay for another person's needs/wants. If this is her personal opinion, I'd be wary as you go forward. I make more money than a lot of people, but it's definitely NOT my responsibility to pay for their life's expenses!

Chalk this one up to experience, and if her car (or anything else) breaks again, make the situation crystal to her that you're wiling to do the repair, IF she pays for the parts.

In retrospect, it would have been better to tell her in advance how much the parts would cost and then ask when she can go to the parts house to pick them up. Since it was not discussed, the situation was ambiguous but she should not have assumed that you would pay for the parts.

This behavior on her part gives you an insight into her attitude about relationships and individual responsibility. Don't press the issue of the money unless it will cause a hardship for you. Just walk away from her and think of the money involved as the cost of preventing a much bigger mistake down the road. Learn a lesson from the experience and move forward.
