How did your college romance happen? What's the story?

Please tell me the story (or more) of how things developed between you and your boyfriend (s)/girlfriend (s) while in college.

I'm trying to figure out dating for the first time while in college, and while the general model of

Met somewhere-->had a nice conversation->hung out a bit->friends->close friends->feelings develop->one tells the other about their feelings for them->dating

is a nice story, it doesn't have enough detail for me to really figure out how I personally want to live it out.

I'm mainly hung up on how to go from just meeting to being friends.

I get all reserved and shy around a girl who I think I could date, so being friends with one is a difficult mental hurdle for me.

I had a hunch this shy guy liked me but he wasn't making any moves other than giving me an awkward side hug when we said goodbye in class.
Actually, that's the reason why I made my gag account back then. I was confused because of his contradictory signals.
Anyway, after knowing him for 1.5 years and going from total strangers to awkward side hugs I figured I'd better take things into my own hand and I asked him out. He was quite surprised because he was trying to indirectly hint at the possibility of meeting outside of class.
So we went out and we became a couple.

It never happened to me unfortunately and I went to college for 6 years. :(
