How to know if a smiley guy likes you?

This guy at work, is a smiley guy and with calm personality. I see that he always with the calm face and he would smile or saying hi to me when we met at the hall. His smile attracted me. But I don't know how to talk to him because I am shy. We don't talk much because we are from different department. But we first met each other during company trip somewhere and we hang out in a group that night. He used to wave and smile at me when we met at the car park. Yesterday he saw me get in the car with my other male colleague. I saw his surprised face when looking at us. I wonder what's on his mind.
