Why did this guy spend a lot of money on a fundraiser then mildly make fun of me?

There's a guy at school with whom I have awesome conversations and text from time to time. We have mutual friends, sometimes we attend the same events, we even have mutual social interests. But that's all.
I was a volunteer at a pie-in-the-face fundraiser for a veterinary hospital when he showed up, noticed me then paid for more than 100 pies then turned my hair into a huge updo.

1, Why was he doing this to me?
2, Why did he aim ONLY at my hair and not my face?
Being generous - raising more money for a good cause
Being flirty - teasing, testing patience, having a crush
Being offensive - humiliating me in front of public
Being critical - disliking my hair even a gooey updo is better
