Why did this guy fall for me? When he confessed, I ran away?

There is this guy I met a few months ago. I've never talked to him that much because the store we work at is always so busy. I have no idea how we actually met, but I do remember he was always late so my manager never let me leave until he got there which frustrated me. I'm terrible with names and faces, so I only kind of knew who he was. Fast forward to now, I should have noticed the signs. He realized he started sneaking glances at me. Like I'd feel him watching me while I was cooking or talking to a friend or whatever and when I looked at him, he wouldn't even bother to look away. Sometimes, he'd tease me and say how long it's been since he's seen me, and I would just laugh and say okay because I thought he was just messing around. I guess I was wrong. Last night, he pulled me aside and told me he's crazy about me. I was shocked and asked him why. He said he's liked me ever since I snapped at him for being late months ago and that he thinks about me a lot. I was speechless so I did the cowardly thing and ran away. I don't understand why he likes me... what did I do? Also I’m scared to go out with him because he’s so different than what I’m used to. He seems like sort of a bad boy— a bit on the sarcastic side and he has a habit of smoking/getting buzzed on his free time. I just don’t understand how this happened between us.
