I'd love that he's willing to cook for me. It's a great way to get to know someone better, instead of the more impersonal restaurant date. But there is a task to do, and it might interrupt the flow of conversation a bit; though not so much that I think it makes it overall a negative. I just find that when entertaining and cooking, the food doesn't turn out quite as well.
I'm not into sharing the task, as much as one person simply doing it. I am your sous chef. I have a lifetime of cooking experience and sometimes passing off a task like food prep, or cleaning up afterwards, feels a bit pointless to me. It depends very much on the person and personalities, but I learn more towards treating someone, and by that I mean the entire experience. (And once in a while, getting the night off, and the other person takes over.)
But in general, it's a cute way to get to know someone. Just check and plan the menu a bit beforehand. You could try surprising them with the ingredients, or you could drop hints, or just outright ask if there's anything they don't eat. That would worry me a bit. (Such as, I don't eat much seafood, and I can't handle spicy food.) Other than that, I love that cooking can be done with love, and it's a form of self-expression and artfulness. So go for it. It makes the person feel special, I think.
