It means you look like someone from a different ethnic background. You say you're middle eastern, that's probably what he's referring to (especially if he's caucasian). He probably wasn't able to pinpoint your background (or didn't want to offend you by making a wrong guess). The word has different connotations in different areas of the world. Personally I consider it neutral, others may find it offensive, some would probably consider it a compliment. How he meant it depends on context.
