With the caveat that I'm speaking in vague generalities due to the polarizing nature of the question...

My observation is that in general, women don't really choose that well. They tend to just stick to whatever man happens to be around more. If that's some abusive, controlling guy, then they go with that. They are more passive in the way a partner is chosen.

On the other hand, men in general tend to be more assertive and proactive in finding and selecting a partner. They don't just sit around and wait for whomever. They are historically more the choosers than the chosen. They also tend to put up with less BS, and will move on if a woman doesn't fit. There are of course exceptions to this, and guys without confidence who stay in unhealthy relationships because they have lost their mojo.

Men - Will pick a partner who can bear healthy children (usually), and will make a formidable partner with him against the world. This is usually without relating to modern times. Men have wanted the same things in women for centuries. Attractive, loyal, healthy, cooperative.

Women- Will (usually) pick a partner who can provide the best life for her. Someone who has sufficient resources, is a good defender of the home, can take care of her if needed. Unfortunately, it is easy to lie to someone about those things.

With that said, real men, who don't do what current society tells them to, usually make the best picks.

Depends how you define “successful mating” I suppose. Women would be more likely to select some godlike figure of wealth and status as a partner. But does that make a guy’s choice “unsuccessful” if he doesn’t fixate on income or status the same way? In terms of availability, it gives him more choices. But in reality men don’t really get to choose many things of this nature.
