He's 21 and I'm 33 - is that too much of an age gap?

Obviously so. But can he handle the major life and experience differences at 21? That is the question. Having the same interests is good for friendships. But what about a relationship? There is more to dating than just the same interests. Everybody of any age like "anime" for example. It holds no age limit unless by type or genre. The younger they are the more immature they may be unless he is the exception to the rule. The same it can be said for older people. Immature people are just that. But at the end of the day, you need way more than shared interests. Does he want to get married, is he mature enough to have a home, a car of his own, can he take care of himself, does he want kids? What is his sexual history? It may dawn on him that you are much older than him, and you must realize this sooner than later.

I had an 18-year-old crush on me at going 28. Trust me, after he found out he slowly weaned away, which was both a blessing as well as disheartening because he reminded me of the pain I went through with guys growing up. Not his fault. But I highly suggest that you as the most older one think wisely for yourself and for his sake because he is very young and may make decisions based on his emotional highs and not always on wisdom. He may not like it, but the last thing you want to do is be more responsible for his decisions as the 33-year-old. The mindset is vastly different. I personally would never date a younger man. They are not on the same level. But that is between you and him. I say the same for girls no different. Too young and way over the 4-5 year age gap. That means you have that wide of a gap in experience, expectations, and desires.
