It’s not really common to do that I don’t think, but it’s not a problem either I guess. He may just want to go out, and interact with real life properly without the distraction of his phone. The only thing I’d worry about, was if he was in trouble and couldn’t contact you. He should probably be worried about if something happened to you too, how would he be contacted in an emergency if he didn’t have his phone? I would try to convince him to start bringing his phone, and have it shut down if he doesn’t want to be distracted by it, and turn it on 2 or 3 times just to check it.

maybe you could try asking if he has some lame excuse then girl somethings definitely up, or maybe his mom confiscated it and he's too embarssed to tell? ( i doubt it) but do ask him, why is he scared to bring his phone around u , scared he'll get caught cheating?
probably figures, noone needs to reach him, so why bring it
the girl i like, left her phone in my car the other day, and i brought it in to her, after i parked it because i was dropping her off so she could get in real quick as it was almost closing time where we were going. She's like "oh, you brought it in, i don't care".. she took it but, i was like, "well, just in case".
Maybe he feels comfortable with you and doesn’t want any distractions. I’m the same way minus leaving at home. I might put it in her bag or leave it in the car because I genuinely like to enjoy my time with her.
It’s not normal but it’s a gesture of he’s not addicted to his phone and he wants to focus on you

In general, men are not as tied to their phone as women are. We men have no problem going out and leaving the phone at home, especially when we want to pay attention to the person (s) we're with and enjoy their company.
Not typical, but I wish it was. It's good to detach from your phone and be generally more independent.
