Bridgeport woman found dead in apartment after meeting older white man on Bumble

A Bridgeport, Connecticut, family has been left devastated and in desperate need of answers after their 23-year-old relative was found dead inside her apartment.

Lauren Smith-Fields was found unresponsive in her Bridgeport apartment on Dec. 12 after she met an older white man on the dating app Bumble. The man, who has not been named, reportedly contacted police about Smith-Fields’ death and he was not detained for questioning, Westchester News 12 reports.

Lakeem Jetter, the brother of the victim, told the outlet that an arrest wasn’t made because officers said the man was “nice” and “didn’t need to be investigated.”

Smith-Fields’ father said the family has had to deal with a “very insensitive, condescending and arrogant detective.”

Smith-Fields’ mother reportedly wrote a letter to the Bridgeport Police Department about her daughter’s case, but they never responded. Councilwoman Maria Pereira says police owe the victim’s mother an apology.

These Social Media can be dangerous, you never know who you are meeting
off the Internet years ago, I met some girl who was a nightmare and I was
lucky I got home alive, She drove her car very fast and played chicken with
a bus she banged her hands on the steering wheel, I warn people to stay away
from meeting others from the Chatline or the Internet and yes nice guys can
get away with murder this is scary and serious

@legalboxers you’re getting carried away here. There is no evidence that man murdered that woman. I agree the police should have investigated better, but your headline is inflammatory.

On the other hand, back this up with some law school training and you’ll make a hell of a trial lawyer 😊.

Her brother Lakeem Jetter has also questioned why the "older white man" she met on the dating app is not a target of suspicion.

"I asked him about the guy, he just made it seem like the guy was a nice guy, nothing to investigate," he claimed of the cops.

So using that logic. Someone can slash someones tires, he is s suspect - but just because of laziness and other reasons not to investigate - saying "Oh he's is a nice guy".

Your looking at other mitigating factors here. If you got a warrant. And looked at the conversation which Bumble provides. Then get a warrant - and get the phone records for the phone. What would you summarize to be about the defendant in question

You need probable cause to get a warrant. I’m not seeing probable cause here. Course I am a defense lawyer.

@gwenhwyfar So there was no intent in her death? accidental? or never happened? if there was circumstantial evidence and video proof of the last person seen was with him. What would the conclusion be?

I agree with you. But you need some threshold level of evidence before you can get a warrant. Yeah, they should’ve investigated further.
