If he has financial issues that even gas money becomes "too much", then he can suggest other ways to date you - take a bus or you go find him, etc. Asking partner for money during dating phase is a red flag.

Hmm. I'm on the fence on this one. Normally, I think people should contribute if someone is giving them a ride. But if he's rich anyway, it does change things slightly, especially if you're his girlfriend.
Maybe you can have a chat with him about it sometime, and express your point of view.
if you share using the gas then yes he may have no money and it's not cheap now!
