How to deal with dating a nervous guy?

Recently I met someone i like however it has been kind of a hassle to communicate with him. He initiated interest and wanted to go out. When we go out on dates it’s chill and fun but talking between dates is dry. He responds with serious answers and the conversation doesn’t really flow. I actually talked to somebody about this and they said he just seems really calculating with his messages maybe because of a lack of confidence. Last time we met I suggested going to see a movie and he said sure. But I can’t tell if he wants to go and I’m afraid of asking him.

Maybe he just isn't all for texting. I would talk about something I know he loves talking about. For example. I have a friend who is passionate about final fantasy 14 and I can ask him, 'So the job that you picked in that game, how does it work exactly?' and we're one hour further of him just rambling about.
I also like to walk right over that wall they put up for themselves and get physical. Not making out or anything, but just cuddling. Hugs are comfortable.
Smiling and joking a lot and speaking softly also seems to work to ease the guy's nerves.
