My partner says “it’s a good job you’re pretty! when I do something daft. Is this a bad sign? Should I reconsider being with him?

When I say do something daft, I mean it’s harmless, nothing ridiculous. But it just makes me question whether he’s with me for the right reasons as I’ve always had previous partners comment on my intelligence as a compliment rather than put downs. It may just be a harmless joke on his part but it’s enough to make me question it. What do you guys and girls of GAG think?

I think communication is so important. It could have been harmless and him trying to make a joke and be funny, or he may just think it's funny. If it's something that hurts your feelings or simply sounds bad (Which I agree, it does, and it's a demeaning and sometimes sexist remark to make), then communicate that with him.
Hopefully, he apologizes and comes to the realization that it doesn't sound good and doesn't say it again.
If he brushes it off, it's a sign he doesn't respect/consider your feelings, and then that's a point where you should reconsider the relationship.

I think more dangerous than what he says is the fact that he's doing something you don't like and your first thought is to dump him instead of talking to him and explain him why that is offensive

If you love the person it would take a lot more for you to even think of dumping him than a bad habit. So I think the bad sign is how fast that idea got into your head.

But that's just my opinion based on how little I know, maybe you don't even know the guy, I dunno.

It’s also not as easy to love someone who criticises you though, you obviously don’t feel loved by them either and you need to feel loved to love, unless you’re a sucker for punishment, but that’s not me.
