How should I ask a girl out?

Ok, so about me, I’m an 18 yo male going to a big university in the USA. There’s lots and lots of cute girls I’d like to get to know better but the problem is I’m not entirely sure how I should approach asking them out. I’m somewhat socially awkward and feel scared that it’d be really weird for me to just approach a girl I like in a public place like a class or the dining hall and ask them if they’d like to go out. I feel almost like it would just make me look weird and potentially creepy. I have friends, but they’re all so far other guys. As of now my hope is maybe one of them can eventually introduce me to a single girl they know since a couple have girls they hang out with. Even one of my friends though told me one day I should just ask out a random girl and that he feels he’s noticed some girls in the big lecture halls looking at me from time to time. Any suggestions for how I can approach it? Is it ok to ask a random girl I don’t know well?
