People lie about all kinds of things for every reason you can imagine.

Lying about dating someone when you're not? A status thing. Fear of ridicule. A 'nice' way to let others know you're not available. Maybe to get your parents off your back?

For the other way around? Might not want to explain things or put a name to the relationship yet. The relation could be somehow troublesome - coworkers for example. Maybe you just want a free lunch and going on a date is often that, not particularly classy but absolutely happens.

So well. Yes. Not a lot of people who do but sure, happens. For the reasons listed and others.

After all dating is not exclusive. It can also signal your perceived attractiveness to others. Letting someone know others want you can as such be used as a means of elevating your appeal as a partner to them.

I lied when I wanted to show some guy that he lost me forever.
I lied when I wanted someone to leave me alone.

I did it twice, once so some guy would leave me alone and another time so some girls would stop constantly asking if I had a boyfriend yet.
