Why is he being so weird?

I had a thing with a guy for 8 months then out of nowhere he ghosted me to "think". Here is the background on our relationship. I was friends with him for awhile than when I went to college we started FaceTiming every night. In October he and my friend decided to visit me on Halloween. The guy and I kissed and established our relationship. It was good until he didn't really trust me 100% so, I had to call it off till we can figure ourselves out. We ended up getting back together as "friends with benefits" but neither of us knew what that meant since we were both little virgins. so we called it off again and continue our friendship with calling every night and going to sleep on FaceTime together. We had sex for the first time together on January 15th. It was sweet. We decided to give it another shot and it lasted for a long time but, since he was still in high school (a senior) and I was a freshman in college. It was hard, we went months without seeing each other so, it was better if we end it again and wait till summer to see how we feel. In the meantime, I kissed other guys and he kissed other girls. We both still FaceTime each other every night. Then one night he totally stopped. I called him out and told him if he doesn't respond we are done. Two weeks later he responded but his whole attitude kinda changed. He was very on and off. He wanted to see me, he doesn't, he does. All of that annoying shit. Ever since he texted me the first time, he would make the conversation. Yesterday he asked "wya", and then today he texted "hello". I just don't get it. I feel like he is just very unsure on what to do and what he wants. I just need someone to explain to me what is going on. He is a sweetheart. However, he is closed off with family stuff and the past. All I know is he was sexual assaulted and cheated on before. He is a strong guy and he knows me very well and I know him pretty well. He is just lost. What are your guys' opinion on thus?
