Dating or just friends?

I was dating this guy for almost four months - everything was great, healthy, and very open and honest on both sides. Really get along well and have this connection that just feels so easy and light and happy. Out of the blue a few weeks ago, he ends it saying that he doesn’t feel ready for a relationship. First he proposed to put a pause on us dating, then when I asked for clarification he then changed it to being friends.

I’ve really grown to like and care for him and I thought the feeling was mutual, but i’m at a loss. I don’t like the feeling of being just friends with him, it doesn’t feel right, and I’ve been meaning to build up the courage to ask whether he’s officially closing the door on us forever or just for the time being.

Meanwhile, he’s texted and called me what feels to be a little more than usual, and now he asked to hang out and I said yes, thinking this would be the time for me to ask him. But now, he’s invited his sister and her significant other to a very date-like activity. If he just wants to be friends, why would he invite them? Please help!

It sounds like there is something going on in his head. He might view himself as unworthy of you or he could still be depressed about a previous relationship. There are many reasons, but it sounds like he still really likes you, but there’s something going on with him that he wants to deal with before he commits to you.
