Why is it so cliche for a man to be taller than his girlfriend/wife?

I don't know, but it might have to do with sexual dimorphism in where men in general are five inches taller than women of equal health. I'm short (three inches taller than you) and every girl I dated was my height or taller; the few there were. The woman I loved was 3.5 inches (11 cm) taller than me.

It is cliche because we've been conditioned to do so. Female goes for strongest male. Male protects female. You see it in the movies constantly, commercials, ...

I would think so. Because there are people who doubt themselves for liking someone whose height goes against the norm and because of that they don't know if they should date that person, even if they like them.
