Why would a guy mail "sorry for everything" ?

My boyfriend treated me like trash 2-3 months prior breaking up. I begged him like anything but he was cold and rigid and highly ignorant.
Last night at 3 he mailed me " I am sorry for everything"

He wants to reconcile.

He's just lonely or maybe drunk

He wants to check , if he still has a chance.

It's just like that he has no intentions to get back.
