Depends if his lack of options is because he chose to not play the dating game anymore, even though he can, or if he plays it and doesn't succeed, to the point that it's not worth trying anymore.

As someone in the second group, the lack of options forced me to choose two paths, innovate to succeed in this game or just quit already. There might be one or two chances of meeting someone which might make someone get back in the game, but some other one might've lost all hope and would prefer to live his life with every other distraction there is to replace the loneliness.
