What to do when a possible love interest is expecting a baby?

I met this guy online a few years ago off a dating website that lived in my state, just 3 hours from me. He was very persistent and consistent on wanting me so we did a long distance relationship for some time. I tried to meet up with him a few times but it didn’t work out during that time since he didn’t own a car. Over time, naturally, I started to lose interest in him quickly because his behavior became very controlling and I began to like a guy nearby.

I was able to get rid of him for some time after that but for whatever reason, I couldn’t stop thinking about him deep down. I ended up chatting with him again and we hit it off. He apologized for his behavior then and things were going great since he was going to join the Navy soon and all that. We tried to meet in the middle but the plan didn’t work out because I was busy.

So he went to boot camp and I continued to wait for him to finish, and when he did he told me that all he thought about was me and made him realize that we were made to be together. I was happy that we were on the right track but then he got stationed half way across the world. That dampened things but I still tried to make an effort communication wise.

tonight though, he disclosed that he found out that he’s a father now since an ex of his is pregnant with his child. I didn’t even know he had sex before going anywhere and claimed that I never finalized what we were. I’m in shock and not sure how to feel or respond. What are you supposed to do in these situations? It’s not talked about much.
