Is it ok to be friends with your crushes first before you start dating them?

My boyfriend and I were "friends who both liked each other" for a couple of months before anything happened. We did know each other a year before that, but we never really talked. Anyways, we just let the relationship develop naturally.

It builds a stronger foundation if you get to know each other on a friendship basis before jumping into a relationship.

That's understandable. Just try to always be the best version of yourself, that's all you can really do.

They're probably trying to slow you down because they think you have a tendency to pick the wrong women. I've seen the flip side of this where a family treats every random boyfriend/girlfriend like a 100% full part of the family and that's a bad idea too.
