I think how a guy dresses for a date depends largely on the location of the date and the weather conditions. If I was meeting a guy at a super nice, very expensive restaurant, I would expect his wardrobe to reflect the atmosphere. A lot of those places have dress codes. If the restaurant is more casual, like a chain restaurant or something, then he doesn’t need to dress in a suit or anything like that. A button down shirt and a nice pair of jeans and shoes. Something like that is also good when meeting for coffee or keeping it simple, like coffee and a walk in a park.

If it’s a movie date, he can dress nicely, but also comfortably because we will be sitting for at least 2 hours. Keep in mind though, that comfortable does not mean sweatpants.

If it’s an active date like skating (for example), then he will be needing to dress appropriately for the activity and possible weather conditions.

To put it simply, I would be impressed by cleanliness, that the clothes are in good condition, and that he looks like he cares about his appearance.

I should add that I would be UNIMPRESSED by clothes like hoodies, sweatshirts, cargo pants, ripped jeans, baggy or sagging pants, tank tops, sandals, socks and sandals, worn out or ripped shirts, etc.

My brother has this rule that I agree with - if you wouldn’t be okay wearing it to a job interview, you shouldn’t wear it on a date.

Under 24, he gains more scores if he dresses up nicely. It shows me that he cares about his appearance and I'd like him to keep it up. Not just because it's first date. My ex showed up really nicely looking but then he just didn't care.

"Dress to impress" wasn't said to be a rumor. It definitely says something about us. My observation is that not putting in any effort is not good for the impression. The few men, who care (and aren't afraid of "ew, that's gay") stand out. Girls have told me this too. To go beyond plain T-shirt and jeans is a step many are not considering - if you remember the okcupid stats in terms of attractiveness each gender rates the opposite, you'll see the biggest % being not only in lack of efforts in dressing but also grooming.
