Is it strange that my girlfriend and I sit in silence when we go out?

We have been together for 5 years and whenever we go out to eat or on a date we tend to just have small talk and not talk much. Is that normal? It’s as if we ran out of things to talk about. We talk daily so we’re usually always up to date with our lives.

That's exactly why you don't have anything to talk about! You spend all day chatting... which is GOOD, by the time you eat out, you can sit in comfortable silence and just... eat.

I honestly don't see the issue, as long as it's not an awkward silence or it bothers you.
Or just save some topics for in person to discuss, and idle chitchat and pleasantries for text.

You’re right. It’s not uncomfortable. We’ll still talk but most of the time I’ll just be watching the game and she’ll bring her laptop to catch up on school work which is fine for me. Just wasn’t always like that
