Meeting a New Girl: How slow is Too slow?

So I told a girl in class who I'm kinda into that I want to "get to know [her] closer". I phrased it like that as to intentionally avoid rejection, and she responded positively.

Wanting to take it slow, I'll try to talk to her a couple of times before I tell her that I actually like her and proceed to ask her out. The problem here is that there's no way to know how we'll get along ergo how many times we can see each other before I have to shoot my shot.

I tried this strategy with one girl before, and we didn't click at all so the whole thing went nowhere. Given how I asked the question [to the new girl], I also don't know if she's even available in the first place.

Is there any way to account for this uncertainty without spoi my intention too early on? How do I find the balance between too slow and too clingy?
