I understand long distance with unknown times can be hard but how about with a fixed time apart?

This would depend on whether you knew the person before the separation or not. Long distance doesn't need to be a deal breaker if a connection is already made and the person will be away for a fixed time. If that connection hasn't previously been made, then it's merely the roll of the dice. It could work, but the person could also be a scammer. Long distance with strangers is a major gamble. You'd have to ask yourself the reason you seek out people who are far away rather than those who are close.

in general im against it, they are a real struggle and eventually someone gets hurt.

however if there was a set date when you would be together again for the longterm then I would consider it.

They are really difficult. Trust is usually an issue and feeling left out. Do yourself a favor and avoid them
