Are people more accepting of online dating and chatting to random people?

I think this is more the norm now compared to say 5 years ago. It doesn't take much for me to friend request a girl on Facebook and start chatting. Not saying it always turns into us dating, but it does seem like they're more up for it compared to a few years ago I was just a weirdo apparently. I have had it happen where I get publicly called out for messaging some girl and usually it's by another girl. Not sure what the deal is with that. Jealously maybe? What are you doing messaging my friend? Bla bla bla. One time a girl said it was her sister I messaged... There names weren't related at all. Maybe she calls her friends sisters?
